Lipoic acid is one of the most thoroughly researched and highly regarded antioxidants. For example, it has been found to promote healthy insulin sensitivity and healthy glucose disposal. Ordinary lipoic acid, also know as S-lipoic acid, is about 30% absorbed from dietary or supplemental sources. R-lipoic acid is the biologically active portion of the molecule and provides maximum antioxidant activity at lower dosage levels. After oral dosing peak plasma concentrations of R-lipoic acid were found to be 40-50% higher than ordinary S-lipoic acid. This suggests that R-lipoic acid is better absorbed than S-lipoic acid. Furthermore, by converting R-lipoic acid to its sodium salt, this new Bioenhanced and stabilized form was shown to absorb 21 times better and 12 times faster than regular R-lipoic acid.
